| Total participation: 13 million plus
Structure: Recreational, Competitive, Select/Premier/Travel
National organizations: US Youth Soccer Association, American Youth Soccer Association, SAY
Target Group: Competitive teams within the USYSA structure. Organized into boys and girls divisions by age, by year with under 9, under 10, under 11, etc. up through age 19. A team will be part of a club which will have teams in some or all age groups. Larger clubs will have multiple teams in a single age group (for example under 13 boys blue, under 13 boys red). Nationally there are over 20,000 teams who compete in competitive leagues in the USYSA structure.
These teams consist of 15-18 players and will travel to compete in leagues and tournaments within their region. Costs to play vary. A player playing fall and spring leagues, and attending a summer camp for a week would spend in excess of $2000/year.
Older players (u15 and above) play one season with their club and another with their high school team. Younger players (u9-u14) will play two seasons of 20-25 games/season with their club.
Secondary Target: Teams that are affiliated with USYSA or AYSO and play at a recreational plus level. These teams will have parent coaches and much lower fees but will compete in state tournaments, have league standings and travel to games. These teams range in age from 6-14.
Key contact: Varies. General starting point would be club president but would go from there to team managers for individual teams. The team manager would generally be a team parent and separate from the coach for the team who is often a paid position.
Design: Clubs will have club logos and colors reflected in their uniform. Individual teams within a club will sometimes have individual team names e.g. Boston United Fury, Boston United Storm, for different teams within the club or simply designate by gender and birth year e.g. Boston United Boys 88, Boston United Girls 85. |
